Stories about debt and its consequences
ALURED DE PENHULL FALLS INTO DEBT

In the reign of Henry 111 (from 1216) the land was held by Alured de Penhull but Alured fell into debt and the property was mortgaged to the Jews. The Prior of Worcester helped him out - but at great cost. The estate was granted to the convent inexchange for an undertaking by the prior to provide him with a €crannock€ of grain, half wheat, half siligo, every six weeks for the rest of his life and rent of half a mark at Michaelmas during the lifetime of his mother and 10s at the same feast every yearr after her death. Alured was also to retain a house and croft belonging to the dower of his mother to inhabit during his life. ALAN LOWE OF THE LAWA The Lowe family were of ancient lineage - they may have fought with King William. In the time of Henry 111 Stephen son of Alan Lowe also got into trouble with the Jews and was being persecuted €detained in heavy chains and compelled to make payment by exquisite torments€ Once again the Prior intervened on his behalf. In gratitide Stephen gave the Prior part of his land at Lawa. At about the same time Stephen granted to the prior and convent all the land which he held of the in Moor in Lawafield. 1220-1 John Lowe (de la LOwa) conveyed land to Alditha widow of David Lowe In a survey of the liberty of Lindridge take in 1240 there were many sokeman €(freemen) of the land of Stephen€ paying rent for land at Lawa. |
