As Lord of the Manor the Prior (or perhaps the Cellerer) was responsible or maintaining law and order on the manor, he would regularly have held the Manor Court.   Each of the submanors would also have held a court that the lord of the Manor would have attended - some Ordnance  Survey maps still show the location of Newnham Court.
