What did churches look like in Arthur's time?
The stone altar, attached to the east end wall meant that the priest had his back to his congregation. The stone chancel arch which separated him from his congregation was quite plain in the early days but as the century progressed the developing skills of the stonemasons and sculptors resulted in elaborate carvings around door frame as well as chancel arches.
By the end 1204 many churches were being enlarged and bigger windows were being built. More space was needed inside the the church, as more people- -deacons and accolytes as well as priests were involved in the elaborate processions that everybody enjoyed. |
